Abstract:
The group is pursuing several experimental and theoretical research and development projects related to the missions of the US Department of Energy (DOE) focused on quantum science and technology. The work broadly encompasses the development of new quantum light sources, detectors, and measurement modalities applied to sensor development and imaging technologies, photonic chips, ion trapping, implementation of secure communication, quantum-classical security, and computing.
Example of specific applications include development of high resolution probe-based morphological and chemical microscopy, bio-sensing, dark-matter detection, coherent low-energy electron generation, and MEMS/NEMS-based sensors. One goal is to achieve multidisciplinary research, cutting across quantum, biological, biomedical, and material sciences, to answer questions such as suitability of specific plant materials for bioenergy production, or bioinspired materials like cellulose-lignin composites for various applications. The research activities are in support of DOE’s quantum research portfolio aimed to address challenges associated with sustainable and secure energy generation and distribution.
Biography:
Dr. Ali Passian received an MS in Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research experience spans fusion plasma (Alcator C-Mod tokamak at MIT), ion storage ring (MSI, Stockholm), and laser communication (Stockholm University). Following two postdoctoral fellowships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory he joined the research staff in the Nanoscale Science and Devices group in the Bio-Science Division focusing on Plasmonics and the physics and sensing and imaging. He later joined the Quantum Information Science Section in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at ORNL where he is exploring the application of quantum sensing and imaging to optical systems and biological materials.
